Merced Class 19 raised $3,375 for the "Kids Ride
Safe" Program and successfully requested a matching
grant from First 5 Merced
County for $6,250. The funding provided child passenger
safety seats and parent education/training for Merced
County families. Unintentional
injuries are the leading cause of death for children
in the United States, and 65 % involve motor vehicle
accidents. Merced County has a
high rate of non-use and incorrect use of child passenger
safety seats. Despite the growing body of evidence that
fatalities can be reduced
through the correct use of child safety seats and recent
laws to support child safety seat usage, there continue
to be substantial barriers to
education about and access to appropriate child safety
seats. Leadership Merced's Class 19 made a substantial
contribution to
address this issue in Merced County.
